Mentre Moses' il modo di mettere insieme le composizioni era in parte dettato dal suo senso del disegno astratto , le disposizioni erano sempre subordinate alle esigenze del paesaggio . In sostituzione della prospettiva accademica ( che non aveva mai imparato ) , aveva fatto ricorso non solo a uno schema progressivo di dimensioni decrescenti , ma anche agli indicatori coloristici dello spazio . Fu veloce nel notare qualità come il blu pallido di colline lontane , o le gradazioni tonali del cielo . Ha tradotto i fenomeni osservati dalla natura in veli di colore e strati di pigmento .
